Last week my friends Moses Israel and Lloyd Burgos visited Brooklyn, New York to compete in the Twin Towers International. Both were nice enough to take time out of their busy schedules to pose for me in front of some local graffiti spots in Red Hook.
Moses, who was born in New York State and moved around often as a child, currently resides in Richmond, Virginia. He trains in a very traditional form of Shaolin Kung Fu and hopes to some day study under Sifu Shi Yan Ming, whose USA Shaolin Temple has trained thousands around the world, along with a number of notable celebrities including The RZA from Wu-Tang Clan. Moses competes on the NASKA circuit of martial arts competitions around the U.S., seeking tournaments that offer Kung Fu categories.
A native of Puerto Rico, Lloyd, who goes by the moniker Ghost Rider, began studying Tae Kwon Do at the age of 6, under the instruction of Masters Abdul Jabbar, Ed T. Winford and Jesus Galvan. He later picked up the joint locking techniques of Hap Ki Do, and then in 1995 Lloyd joined the Degerberg Academy where he began training in Kung Fu, Kick Boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun and Wrestling. Today, Lloyd also competes on the NASKA circuit in tournaments that offer Kung Fu categories.
