Shaw Brothers at the flea market

Visited the Meadowlands Flea Market with my wife last weekend looking for some cheap DVD disc holders, and came upon Britt, a DVD and jewelry vendor (remember, it’s a flea market) who had ample supplies of low-cost REAL copies of classic B-movies and horror imports. Mixed in with Mario Bava and rare Blaxploitation gems were hard to find Shaw Brothers, Media Blasters, Venom Mob Films, Crash Masters and more, all priced to sell. We talked about his days at Chiller Theatre, New Jersey horror conventions, and the changing home entertainment scene. Between my conversation with him, my memories of waiting in line to watch Friday the 13th Part 3D (lensed here in NJ) in Journal Square, and recently learning that groundbreaking filmmaker Oscar Micheaux made some of his early films in The Garden State, I’ve come to realize that New Jersey has a rich cinematic history that most people have never heard of.
